Mary has lived in Thurston County since 1999. She lives on Lake St. Clair in Thurston County with her husband John, their two dogs Skipper and Daisy and their cat Jazz. She enjoys gardening, the outdoors, hiking with her puppies, sailing, camping, skiing and has taken up tennis again after a 30 year hiatus.
Mary grew up in Rockford, Illinois, spending most of her childhood on the tennis court. After school, she moved to Fairbanks, Alaska, and worked there for a few years before relocating to the Pacific Northwest where she met and married her husband, John Hall, then a self-employed computer programmer.
Mary worked with John in the family business, and became dismayed at the cost of healthcare. The healthcare issue motivated her to join Washington Citizen Action. She worked with WCA in 1990 as a field manager on national healthcare reform. She was also a community organizer bringing groups together to lobby for health care reform at the state level. Mary has learned that one person can make a difference.
While Mary was continuing her education at Clover Park Technical College in the accounting program, an opportunity presented itself to participate in shaping the future politics of Washington State. Mary was recruited as the Pierce County Field Manager for the successful 1992 Mike Lowry for Governor Campaign. Following the election, Mary worked on Mike Lowry’s transition team as part of the Energy, Technology and Telecommunications task force.
Mary is the Pierce County Elections Supervisor and began her elections career in 1996. She is a nationally and state certified election and registration administrator. She graduated in 2004 from the national certification program sponsored by Auburn University and the Elections Center. Mary continued her education at University of Washington studying database administration and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Mary won the Pierce County Innovation Award in 2012 for her vision to integrate GIS and voter registration. This vision was a result of her experience redistricting following the 2000 decennial census. This integration made it possible to completely redraw all of Pierce County Precincts to accommodate the new 10th Congressional District and create smaller precincts.
The Thurston County Auditor’s position is a natural next step for Mary. She will bring proven leadership skills, and 16 years of important experience to this position. Mary is committed to conducting fair, accurate, honest and transparent elections and to provide efficient licensing and recording services to the citizens of Thurston County. Mary will make sure the county continues to publish a local voter’s pamphlet to ensure voters can become educated about candidates and issues. She will also explore creating voter pamphlets for all spring ballot measures. Mary is committed to reach out to the youth of Thurston County and encourage civic engagement by participating early in the Democrat process.
